How to Clean and Maintain a Marble Floor

A marble floor can retain its beauty for many years when it is cleaned with suitable products and protected from avoidable damage. Because marble is a calcium-based natural stone, it needs a different care routine from ceramic tiles or many engineered surfaces.

Know your marble and its finish

Polished, honed and textured finishes do not react in exactly the same way to wear and cleaning. Marble can also absorb liquids if it is not adequately protected. Keep the name of the stone and finish with your project records so that future treatments can be chosen correctly.

Daily and routine cleaning

Remove dust and grit with a soft broom, microfibre mop or vacuum attachment that will not scratch the floor. For damp cleaning, use clean warm water and a pH-neutral product specifically suitable for natural stone. Do not leave standing water on the surface.

Avoid acidic and abrasive products

Vinegar, lemon, limescale remover and many general bathroom cleaners can etch marble and leave dull marks. Abrasive powders and rough pads may scratch the finish. Always check the product label and test any new treatment on a discreet area first.

Respond quickly to spills and stains

Blot spills rather than spreading them, then clean the area with a suitable neutral product. Wine, coffee, oil and cosmetics can require different treatments. If a stain remains, ask a stone-care professional to identify it before applying a poultice or stronger product.

Protect high-traffic areas

Use clean entrance mats to capture sand and grit, and fit suitable pads beneath furniture. Lift furniture instead of dragging it. Depending on the stone, location and treatment already applied, periodic sealing may be recommended; sealing reduces absorption but does not make marble stain-proof or acid-proof.

Loss of shine, scratches, etching, uneven wear or persistent staining may require professional honing, polishing or restoration. A specialist can assess the finish and carry out the work without creating visible patches or further damage.
